Happy New State Standard! 30 January 2025
Russian dairy producers are getting ready to operate under new regulations

Protected fats and proteins, calcium salts of fatty acids, sunflower, soybean and rapeseed press cake – EFKO showcased conventional and innovative animal feed products at the Agros international exhibition for agribusiness professionals. The Smart Farm project's operational model involves more than just selling fodder; it includes full support for ration formulation, laboratory testing, and thorough independent audits of livestock projects.

One of the pressing issues now is expanding the scope of the laboratory's accreditation for testing milk for triglycerides and stearins using the new method of the All-Russian Research Institute of the Dairy Industry (VNIMI) to comply with the new GOST (state standard) for raw cow's milk.

The new GOST has become a major point of discussion among dairy farmers. It has been in effect since 2025, and now every batch of raw milk shipped shall be mandatorily tested for fatty acid profile (FAP). A deviation in any of the sixteen indicators may be interpreted as falsification. Its detection automatically results in additional testing of milk for triglycerides.

"In general, the FAP checking cannot be called something new. These analyses have been conducted previously, but they were for the finished product only, for example, butter or sour cream. Raw milk has never been tested on a large using this method. For consumers, the new measure provides an extra assurance of product quality. However, farmers, even the diligent ones, face the risk of losing income from the same milk if the FAP fails to meet GOST standards. Since minor variations in the fatty acid composition can occasionally be attributed to the herd's genetic traits, the ability to influence it is quite limited.

Laboratories, in turn, are actively reorganizing their operations according to the new GOST. We already perform basic analyses as per GOST requirements, they are part of the accreditation scope, and we are prepared to assist farmers. We will start testing for triglycerides and stearins as soon as we are accredited. All the paperwork and applications are in place. Now we just need to wait for confirmation."

Irina Pervykh,
Director of the Effective Feed Division by EFKO
"We often repeat that cows thirty years ago and now are different animals, with different needs and efficiency. Genetics, welfare conditions, and feed resources have changed dramatically. It is completely normal for the FAP of milk to change as a result.

I think with the new GOST, more farms will get into the details of the diet and try to adjust it to meet the standard. High-quality feed and supplements will be crucial in this context.

We keep track of all the demands of our market. Each year, we observe a growing demand for effective feed additives from farmers. Last year alone, sales of EFKO's protected fats increased by a quarter. Protected proteins – over one and a half times more.

Accounting for this trend, we intend to multiply the production of calcium salts of fatty acids. In addition, we are actively developing our feed enzyme technologies and preparing to construct a new production facility. Today there are no such domestic technologies and factories, all products are imported. Advancing in this direction will safeguard the market and mitigate risks from potential challenges with international supplies."
